I didn't use the included screws, but did use the washers. Rather than screw in to the bottom of the desktop, I tapped into the metal frame underneath it and mounted onto that. The included velcro straps are really big, sized for holding an outlet strip or large power brick. I used some smaller ones to keep cables in their places.
